The Word For Today.Standing Appointment.
If the perfect, sinless Son of God required a non-negotiable, intentional time of solitude to connect with the Father, how do we expect our spiritual lives to survive without one?
We live our lives enslaved to the ding of notifications, the weight of overflowing calendars, and the relentless demands of our daily routines. We diligently schedule dentist visits, oil changes, and business meetings, protecting those blocks of time with fierce determination. Yet, when it comes to the most vital relationship in our lives, we often offer God only the leftover crumbs of our day. We promise to pray "when things slow down," but they never do.
In Mark 1:35, we witness a masterclass in priorities. The night before, Jesus had been inundated by a chaotic crowd of sick and demon-possessed people at Peter's doorstep. He was undoubtedly exhausted. Yet, His immediate response to a demanding schedule was not to sleep in, but to slip away. He modeled what it means to keep a standing appointment with the Father.
Here are three guiding lessons for our consideration.
1The Priority of the Appointment. Jesus did not fit prayer into a gap in His schedule; He built His schedule around prayer
By rising "very early in the morning, while it was still dark," He gave the Father His first and absolute best. The Principle: True devotion requires us to seek God before the world has a chance to make demands on our time. The Practice: We must transition from an "if I have time" mindset to a "first things first" commitment.
2The Place of the Appointment. Intimacy requires isolation
Jesus intentionally "left the house and went off to a solitary place." He knew that the noise of the house and the expectations of the crowd would easily choke out quiet communion. The Principle: To hear the still, small voice of God, we must intentionally unplug from the loud, persistent voices of retail, news, and social media. The Practice: Find a physical space — a specific chair, a quiet room, or a porch — that serves as your designated sanctuary for stillness.
3The Purpose of the Appointment. Jesus did not go to the lonely place to hide, to escape His calling, or to lazily unwind
The text explicitly states that He went there to pray. His purpose was absolute alignment and deep communion with the Father. The Principle: Our personal devotional time is not an exercise in ticking off a spiritual checklist; it is the vital fuel line for our souls. The Practice: Protect this time solely for the purpose of talking to God, reading His Word, and listening for His clear direction.

The Appeal
Do not let the demands of a busy day crowd out the One who gives you breath to live it. When you skip your time with God, you try to carry burdens you were never meant to bear alone. Prioritize the Creator over the creation today. Decide right now that your meeting with Him is non-negotiable, because a life aligned with God is too important to leave to chance.

“My time with God is my most important meeting today. I will not give Him my leftovers, and I will protect our appointment above all other demands.”
